Eco-Sanitation Low-Cost Project With Constructed Wetland Technology
Eco-Sanitation Low-Cost Project
With Constructed Wetland Technology
Sanitation project implemented with simple technology is a Complete and healthy sanitation system working through simple technology.
It is easy to use and the cost of maintenance is simple compared to the cost of mechanical sanitation. Furthermore, the community will participate in the implementation.
The overall objective:
The project aims to conserve of groundwater pollution resulting from the old methods that people in poor communities use to get rid of waste water and waste (toilets) and preserve the environment to maintain public health and reduce diseases through the implementation of low-cost Sanitation model that can be applied in various other locations (rural / slums). Also the water is used for irrigation after treatment.
- The project objectives
- Reduce the pollution from wrong use for the wastewater in the poor communities to protect ground water from pollution.
- This also resulted from the wrong way in getting provide healthy environment for the poor communities in the rural rationalize the use of water in the targeted communities and encourage the use of satiation’s treated water in irrigation .
- Raise the targeted communities’ awareness with the healthy and environmental ways to manage the wastewater.
- Reduce the levels of groundwater that cause in buildings, bad smells and spread of harmful insects.
- The basic components of the project :
- Lines of regression:(lines of the streets, a private home)
- Lines of expulsion : (the main line that connects from the lifting station to the treatment plant )
- Lifting station: (a collection of rooms for the entire village is injected into the line of the package and then to the treatment plant).
- Corresponding rooms : (a compilation of more than a house for the compilation of exchange to the lifting station )
- The treatment plant : (a great site that is a compilation of such waste, processing and output to the possibility of taking advantage of it in agricultural irrigation).
- Lines and stages of the project
The duration of the implementation of the project, ranges from 8 to12 months depending on the nature of the site and the population.
- Raise community awareness of the importance of the project and explain its components and benefits to the whole community to gain support for the idea.
- Stimulate the entire community to contribute to the establishment of the village through (in kind / cash contributions).
- The composition of the local committee shall be responsible for following-up and raising community awareness and follow-ups after training onsite contractors.
- Surveyors fully lift the village streets and spaces in length and the number of homes and the selection of station sites to be uploaded within the village and the treatment plant to be outside the village and the work of engineering maps showing the paths, entrances and exits of the village.
- Selection of professional engineering consultants with previous experience in sanitation for the work conditions of an explanatory booklet for the work will be carried out within the village (the stations and lines of regression lines and expulsion) and put the tendering contractors have the expertise to do so.
- The implementation stage of drainage through a specific timetable and successive phases – lifting station and then regression lines and then the expulsion, and the treatment plant and set construction, technical engineer to monitor the quality of implementation site.
- Training a group of young village on the work of the integrated operation and maintenance of the continuity of the idea to the village level.
- Identified a system of monthly fees paid by the family, so to spend on the project (maintenance and operation) after the expiration of the full project implementation.
- Cost of the models project
First model: in 2010, the cost of a Sanitation model in a village populated by 10,000 people and which covers the entire village is approximately 1,740,000 EGP, equivalent to the amount of $ 300,000 dollars which means 174 EGP/person.
Second model: in 2014, the cost of a Sanitation model in a village populated by 2000 people and which covers the entire village is approximately 707,200 EGP, equivalent to the amount of $ 104,000 which means 353.6 EGP/person.
However the cost of system used by the government is high and, according to the reports of the Holding Company for Water and Waste Water, costs 2500EGP/person.
- The Project Sustainability
Operation and maintenance of the project may be sustained in either of the following two ways:
1. Create a local NGO, responsible to the community, to collect fees, operate and maintain the system;
Or
2. Turn over the system to the local government holding company for water and waste water for their operation and maintenance and collection of covering costs through a fee levied on the water bill of each participating home.
The preferred system is that of the local NGO for reason of resulting greater direct involvement and feeling ownership by the community.
- ADVANTAGES OF THE SYSTEM
- Minimal land requirement
- Harmonious with nature in appearance and dynamics
- Proven technology
- Cost of operation and maintenance lower than traditional technology
- Good pathogen removal from die-off and natural biological processes
- Effective with a wide range of water plants.
- High levels of treatment possible by increasing planted area.
- Uses gravity feed to reduce use of energy.
- Low capital investment (typically 5% of traditional technology).
